On Thursday, April 14, an investiture ceremony was conducted for U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Stephanie Dawkins Davis (left), Eastern District of Michigan, at the Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit. Happy to welcome Davis to the bench was U.S. District Court Chief Judge Denise Page Hood (right). Davis began her legal career as a civil defense attorney at Dickinson Wright PLLC where her practice was split evenly between products liability and commercial litigation. In 1997, she joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan where she remained until her appointment to the bench.  She served her first 3 years there in the office’s civil division before transferring to the criminal division in 2000. In 2010 she was appointed to serve as the executive assistant United States attorney. In that position, amongst other responsibilities, she oversaw a variety of law enforcement and community initiatives, including Project Safe Neighborhoods and the Detroit Youth Violence Prevention Initiative. She also led the office’s diversity efforts, redesigned and oversaw its legal intern program, and led the development of its Legal Fellows program.  A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Davis received Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in 1988 and 1989 respectively from the Wichita State University, and a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1992. Davis is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, and has held memberships with the Federal Bar Association, the Wolverine Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
