Michigan State Police boosting traffic enforcement this week

LANSING (AP) - Michigan State Police say they are boosting traffic safety enforcement this week in an effort to reduce crashes and deaths on the roadways.

The efforts are part of Operation Safe Driver Week, which runs through Saturday. It will focus on both commercial and non-commercial drivers.

Authorities say Michigan had a nearly 20 percent drop last year in fatal crashes involving commercial motor vehicles. Officials have coalesced around a national campaign called Toward Zero Deaths.

Experts say many crashes are caused by errors made by both truck and bus drivers, as well as passenger-vehicle motorists driving unsafely around them.
