Oakland County honored for fiscal reporting again

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has given Oakland County top honors for fiscal reporting for the 26th year in a row. GFOA just bestowed the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting upon Oakland County for its Fiscal Year 2016 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). The CAFR discloses the county’s finances in full detail to anyone who wants to review them, particularly those who seek to invest in Oakland County."

“Our fiscal services team receives this award so regularly that it almost seems routine, but nothing could be further from the truth,” Oakland County Executie L. Brooks Patterson said. “The CAFR is the result of a professional team and a lot of hard work.”

Management & Budget Director Laurie VanPelt echoed Patterson’s praise.

“This award is a testimony to the good work conducted by the Fiscal Service Division staff who worked long hours to close the books for fiscal 2016 on an aggressive timetable and publish the CAFR that meets the stringent standards established by the GFOA,” VanPelt said.

Fiscal Services Officer Lynn Sonkiss is proud of her employees’ achievements.

“We have a great team in Fiscal Services who continue to make the CAFR award possible. I am very proud of this group effort,” Sonkiss said. “I also am very appreciative for the support provided by County Executive Administration.”

The GFOA awards the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to governments “to encourage and assist (them) to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure and then to recognize individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal.”
