On July 17, Western Michigan University Cooley Law School students were recognized for outstanding academic achievement, professionalism and leadership roles with various student organizations during the law school's Auburn Hills campus Honors Convocation.

During the convocation, Laila Malki and Herman Moncure were presented the Alumni Distinguished Student Award. The award honors those students who have distinguished themselves throughout their law school career in the categories of academic success, high moral character and professionalism, participation and leadership in student organizations, and service to their community. The award is presented to graduating seniors who are nominated by the law school's faculty, or by their peers. Winners are selected by members of the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School Alumni Association Executive Committee.

In addition to the Alumni Distinguished Student Award, Malki was honored for her role as senior associate editor of the Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law Review. She also received recognition for her involvement with the Organization of Woman Law Students; and the Order of Graduation Marshals, an honorary society of student volunteers who assist during commencement ceremonies. While attending WMU-Cooley, Malki has completed internships with Akouri & Associates, Flood Law, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, the Michigan Attorney General's Office Civil Rights Division, and automotive supplier BorgWarner Inc.

Moncure has served as treasurer of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Honor Society, and has been active with the WMU-Cooley Black Law Students Association and the National Black Law Students Association. He is a student member of the Detroit Bar Association, Wolverine Bar Association, and National Bar Association. Moncure serves as a member of the law school's Leadership Academy and as a student attorney for the WMU-Cooley Estate Planning clinic.
