Veteran journalist to speak at labor law symposium

John Gallagher, senior business columnist with the Detroit Free Press, will deliver the keynote address during the Bernard Gottfried Memorial Labor Law Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Wayne State University Law School.

Alumni, students and anyone interested in furthering their insight into labor law are invited to attend the symposium from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at the Law School, 471 W. Palmer St., Detroit.

Gallagher is the author of “Reimagining Detroit: Opportunities for Redefining an American City,” which was named by the Huffington Post among the best social and political books of 2010. His most recent book is “Yamasaki in Detroit: A Search for Serenity,” a biography of architect Minoru Yamasaki. Gallagher is a native of New York City and joined the Detroit Free Press in 1987 to cover urban and economic redevelopment efforts. In 2017, he was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.

The symposium, in its 27th year, is sponsored by Wayne Law, the National Labor Relations Board Region 7, and the State Bar of Michigan Labor and Employment Law Section.

The symposium will include three sessions:

• “Changing, Tweaking and Clarifying Union Obligations”
• “Rats, Rules and Reevaluations: Current Affairs at the NLRB”
• “USDOL Office of Inspector General, Office of Labor Racketeering and NLRB - Hot Topics”

The registration fee for the symposium is $100, which includes all sessions, presentation materials, continental breakfast and lunch. Students, NLRB staff and government employees can register for a reduced cost of $35. The State Bar of Michigan is sponsoring 20 free student attendees on a first-come, first-serve basis. The deadline for registration is Monday, Oct. 14. Register online at go.wayne.edu/gottfried19. Parking is available for $8.50 (credit and debit cards only) in Structure No. 1 across West Palmer Street from the Law School.

Proceeds from the symposium will be used to fund future educational programs and labor law studies at Wayne Law. For more details, email Joan Verla, joan.verla@wayne.edu.

Continuing Legal Education credits for Ohio and Indiana may be applied for at the conference sign-in table.

The symposium honors the labor relations vision of Bernard Gottfried (1925-92), who was director of Region 7 from 1973 until his death. He taught as an adjunct professor at Wayne Law for many years.
