Bench Bar Conference to be presented online

The Oakland County Bar Association will present “District Court Bench Bar Conference—2020: What’s Next?” as an online program on Friday, October 9, from 8 a.m. to noon. The event will be hosted by Motown Digital.
While the program will be virtual, “our goal is the same - to provide local attorneys and judges the opportunity to interact outside the courtroom in an informal, solution-oriented environment,” said a spokesperson for the OCBA.

“Gain valuable insights to enhance your legal practice and join us as we build congeniality between the bench and the bar. We have a distinguished group of speakers joining us this year.”

The conference features sessions with different presentations. When registering, attendees will need to choose a presentation for each session. The sessions include:

• Session A
Civil—“Post-post Covenant: Where are we now?” with Matthew Payne, Sigal Law Firm.
Criminal—“Assisting DWLS Defendants in Restoring Driving Privileges*” with Oakland County 44th District Court Judge Derek Meinecke, Oakland County 47th District Court Judge Marla Parker, and Robert J. Morad, Law Offices of Robert J. Morad PLLC.

• Session B

Civil—“How to Appeal-Proof Your Case” with Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Elizabeth L. Gleicher.
Criminal—“Avoiding Ethical Pitfalls in Criminal Defense Practice*” with Kenneth M. Mogill, Mogill, Posner, & Cohen.

• Plenary Session

“A View From the Bench*” with Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget M. McCormack.
(*Each of these sessions is worth one credit hour for attorneys taking criminal appointments in Oakland County.)

Cost for OCBA members is $45. OCBA new lawyers, paralegals, students, and judicial law clerks pay $25. A link will be sent to attendees before the conference with instructions on how to participate in this year’s event.
