“Virtual” is becoming the new norm in all walks of life during the coronavirus pandemic, and running events are no exception.

The annual Race Judicata, presented each fall by the Oakland County Bar Association, will be staged this year in virtual form from October 11-17.

“Join the OCBA virtually for this family-friendly event,” said a spokesperson for the Oakland Bar. “Complete your 5-km run or walk during the week of October 11-17 then log your time online (by 9 p.m. on October 17). Awards will be presented to the fastest individual female and the fastest individual male participants – yes, it is an honor system. Registrants will receive a race medallion and a custom Facebook frame to place over their profile photo, if desired. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Oakland County Bar Foundation.”

The cost of entering is $20 and includes a race bib, medal, and shipping. To register, visit the OCBA website at www.OCBA.org.

Typically, the event is staged at Covington Middle School in Bloomfield Hills, just a short trek from the race’s previous home at the former Andover High School. The move produced a “kinder and gentler” race course for running and walking participants, eliminating some of the “very stiff hills” that spiced the 5-km route from the old Andover site, according to officials with the OCBA.

Last year was the 40th edition of the popular event and featured some impressive times for winners in the men’s and women’s divisions over the 3.1-mile distance.
Alexander Krasuski was the top male finisher in the 5-km race, crossing in 17:17, a slick 5:34 per mile pace. Placing second in the male division was Jeffrey Hicks with a 17:44 clocking, while Dominic Schmidt was third in 18:30.

Erica Shell took top honors in the women’s 5-km race, posting a time of 18:39, which equates to a 6:00 per mile pace. Leslie McIntyre was runner-up with a 23:34 effort, while Victoria Bellamy was third in 25:05.

The lead sponsor of this year’s event will be the law firm of Dickinson Wright. Gold sponsors are Harness Dickey, Jaffe, and BSP Law.
