"Ladies of LAD," a group of 11 women office managers at Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc., is helping to build homes for Habitat for Humanity Detroit (HHD) on the city's east side. HHD's goal is to build 100 homes in the MorningSide neighborhood, off of I-94 between Warren and Mack avenues, near Alter Road, according to Kesha Sawyer, office manager of the family law unit of LAD's Civil Law Group and secretary of Ladies of LAD. Since the project began in 2006, 70 homes have been built, Sawyer said. She and nine other members of Ladies of LAD spent June 23 at HHD's workshop building rough carpentry components for the remaining 30 homes. Before the work day at HHD, Ladies of LAD participated in a work-a-thon for the project, raising more than $800 in donations to support Habitat families. "We chose to work with Habitat for Humanity because of its major role in revitalizing the community and strengthening families," Sawyer said. MorningSide is one of several projects that Ladies of LAD will work on this year, Sawyer said. "We're looking for additional ways to give to our community beyond the legal services that LAD provides," she said.
