Conducting a Clinic

Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc., in partnership with the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association and Thomas M. Cooley Law School, conducted a free clinic on expungement of criminal records for residents of Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties on Jan. 25 at Fellowship Chapel in Detroit. Lynda Krupp, managing attorney of the Private Attorney Involvement Unit of LAD's Civil Law Group, conducted the clinic.

“Although the weather was horrendous, we had more than 60 people needing help removing a criminal conviction from their records so they can get jobs,” Krupp said. “We appreciate the assistance provided by the law students, the faculty of Cooley Law School and the volunteer attorneys with the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association.”
 
Michigan allows for expungement, or removal from the public record, of records of single criminal convictions after five years, according to LAD’s legal rights handbook for former offenders.

“Expungement, or setting aside a conviction, allows a person to move forward with [his or her] life without the baggage of a prior conviction or having to disclose a criminal record,” the handbook says.

Not all convictions can be expunged, however, including those for crimes that carry possible life sentences and traffic convictions such as drunk driving, or where there is lifetime probation.
