 Assistant defender to receive Outstanding Young Lawyer Award

The State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section will present Marilena David-Martin with the Regeana Myrick Outstanding Young Lawyer Award on Saturday, May 31, at the Radisson Hotel in Lansing.

The award is named for Regeana Myrick, who was a very active member of the SBM Young Lawyers Section Executive Council when she died in 1997. It is presented annually to a young lawyer in Michigan who has demonstrated many of her best qualities, including an overwhelming commitment to public service, exemplary service to the State Bar, and exceptional professional accomplishments.
 
Marilena David-Martin is an assistant defender at the State Appellate Defender Office in Detroit, where she has most recently worked as the staff attorney for the SADO Department of Justice Gideon Grant.  She was awarded the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan Justice for All Award for her work investigating convictions involving the now closed Detroit Crime Lab. David-Martin serves on the Appellate Practice Section Council, where she co-chaired the Good Deeds Committee. She has also volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit. She is the chair of the SADO Community Outreach Committee, and has been involved in developing “Family Outreach
Nights” and a community resource database as part of a reentry project. David-Martin is an active volunteer with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and with the Detroit Parade Company. 

The Outstanding Young Lawyer Award will be presented as part of the SBM Young Lawyers Section Seventh Annual Summit. The Summit contains a full day of seminars that will cover substantive and skill-based tracks on such topics as family law, criminal law, negligence law, mediation, trial skills and advocacy, practice management and client development. It will also feature a keynote address from Michigan Supreme Court Justice David F. Viviano.
 

Half-day Seminar on lawyer trust accounts to be held June 17

“Lawyer Trust Accounts: Management Principles and Recordkeeping Resources” is set for Tuesday, June 17 from 1:30–4:45 p.m. at Thomas M. Cooley Law School Grand Rapids Campus, fifth floor, 111 Commerce Ave SW. Cost is $50 for lawyers, $25 for non-lawyers. Register online or by mail/fax form PDF before June 12.
 
No “walk-in” registrations will be accepted.

This half-day seminar will feature presentations on how to ethically manage lawyer trust accounts, and effectively use forms, checklists and other recordkeeping resources. The seminar, open to lawyers and their staff members, is an excellent way to learn more about Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct 1.15 and 1.15A.

Participants will receive practical information as well as materials prepared by the presenters: SBM Professional Standards Investigative Counsel Danon Goodrum-Garland, SBM Assistant General Counsel Nkrumah Johnson-Wynn, and Attorney Grievance Commission Senior Associate Counsel Rhonda Pozehl.
