Wayne Law honors 6, announces 13 wall of fame inductees at Treasure of Detroit

Alumni, students, faculty, staff, supporters and community leaders helped to recognize six honorees Thursday, April 21, at Wayne State University Law School’s 18th Treasure of Detroit.

The event, which was in the Gem Theatre in Detroit, honored some of the brightest lights in the legal profession and celebrated the growth and success of the law school.

This year’s Treasure of Detroit honorees were:

• Patricia M. Nemeth, J.D. class of 1984, LL.M. class of 1990, founder of Nemeth Law PC in Detroit

• John R. Roth, J.D. class of 1985, inspector general of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security

• Kathleen Wilson-Thompson, J.D. class of 1982, LL.M. class of 1996, executive vice president and global chief human resources officer for Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. in Deerfield, Ill.

• Justice Brian K. Zahra, WSU B.A. class of 1984, Michigan Supreme Court

Barbara Klarman, J.D. class of 1964, who is retired from private practice, received the Honorary Order of the Coif Award. Associate Professor Susan Cancelosi received the Donald H. Gordon Award for Excellence in Teaching.

In addition, the inaugural members of the Miller Family Wayne Law Alumni Wall of Fame also were announced (and will be honored at an induction ceremony this fall). Inductees are:
• Georgia Clark, former director of the Wayne Law Library

• Kenneth Cockrel Sr., class of 1967, defense attorney, being honored posthumously

• Eugene Driker, class of 1961, founding member of Barris, Sott, Denn and Driker and who has served the law school and the university in numerous roles

• Judge Nancy Edmunds, class of 1976, of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan

• Paula Ettelbrick, class of 1984, LGBT rights attorney, being honored posthumously

• Janet Findlater, Wayne Law associate professor

• Dan Gilbert, class of 1987, chairman and founder of Quicken Loans and Rock Ventures and majority owner of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers

• Judge Charles Joiner, former dean of Wayne Law and former judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan

• Judge Damon J. Keith, LL.M. class of 1956, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit

• Edward Littlejohn, Wayne Law professor emeritus

• Jon Muth, class of 1971, attorney, mediator and arbitrator

• Stephen Ross, class of 1965, chairman and founder of Related Companies and owner of the Miami Dolphins

• Stephen Schulman, Wayne Law professor, being honored posthumously

Speaking at the event were Wayne Law Board of Visitors Chair Kathryn J. Humphrey, class of 1980; Wayne Law Dean Jocelyn Benson; Justice Marilyn Kelly, class of 1971, member of the WSU Board of Governors; and WSU President M. Roy Wilson.
