People’s Law College slated for January 25

The Oakland County Bar Association will host a People’s Law College on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at the Ferndale Public Library from 6-8 p.m.

The free event, sponsored by the Oakland County Bar Foundation, is designed to help educate members of the community on different areas of the law and to assist attendees in finding answers to their legal questions with first-hand insight from noted Oakland County attorneys.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner, who will present “Property Taxes: What to Do if You Can’t Pay” from 6-6:50 p.m.

Two additional seminars, taking place simultaneously from 7-7:50 p.m., will be “Anatomy of a Divorce” with Kelly Bidelman, from the Legal Aid & Defender Association, and “Employment Issues: Know Your Rights” with Syeda Davidson, from Burgess Sharp & Golden.

“We are also offering a free ‘Ask-a-Lawyer’ session for the duration of the program,” said Merri Lee Jones, professional development director for the OCBA. “We are looking for volunteer attorneys in the areas of juvenile, family, bankruptcy, probate, criminal, general civil and landlord/tenant law. We also need an intake attorney to help determine client needs.”

Contact Merri Lee Jones at (248) 334-3400 if you are able to volunteer for part or all of the evening. The Ferndale Public Library is located at 222 E. 9 Mile Road.

Ceremony to mark opening of new Wayne County Friend of the Court office space

The Wayne County Friend of the Court opened its long-awaited new office space on Jan. 3. The Friend of the Court offices remain in the historic Penobscot Building but now enjoy newly refurbished office space on the first, tenth, eleventh and twelfth floors of the building.

Hon. Kathleen M. McCarthy, presiding judge of the Family Division, announced the completion of the project:

“This project was started in an effort to better serve the families of Wayne County with improved security; convenient payment offices on the first floor; state-of-the-art electronics throughout the building, and an improved space design to allow streamlining workflow and caseflow practices.”

“We have been waiting a long time for this move,” said Kent Weichmann of Wayne County Friend of the Court.  I think it will significantly improve court services at the Friend of the Court, as well as significantly improve working conditions for our staff.”

The main entrance for the offices is now located off the Fort Street entrance at the Penobscot Building. The customer service window and genetic testing area are on the first floor. The referee hearing rooms and two judges’ courtrooms are on the tenth and eleventh floors. Visitors to the Friend of the Court offices should use the “D Bank” of elevators to access the new space.

The public is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Wayne County Friend of the Court on Tuesday, Jan. 17 for an introduction to the newly renovated and relocated office space. Court security screening will be in effect.
The event will take place at 645 Griswold Street from 3:30-5:30 p.m. with the ribbon cutting ceremony to begin at 4 p.m. Light refreshments shall be served.
