ABA Legal Fact Check site adds speech in the workplace as update

The American Bar Association updated its new web-based legal fact check service today by exploring the conflicting issues regarding free speech in the workplace.

The site, ABA Legal Fact Check, debuted a week ago and is the first fact check website focusing exclusively on legal matters. The project is one of several initiatives launched by Hilarie Bass, who became the new ABA president on Aug. 15 at the close of the ABA Annual Meeting in New York.

Questions about the free speech rights of employees in the workplace received considerable attention earlier this month when a Google engineer was fired after his 10-page document chastising the company’s diversity efforts became public. The new item offers a brief legal history of speech in the workplace and notes that the extent of free speech protection in the workplace depends on many factors, such as whether the employee works in the public or private sector, the state in which the individual works, applicable federal and state statutes and whether the worker is protected by a union.

ABA Legal Fact Check seeks to help the public find dependable answers to swirling and sometimes confusing legal questions. The URL for the new site is www.abalegalfactcheck.com. Follow us on twitter @ABAFactCheck.

Defense lawyer marks 35 years representing the accused in Detroit

Detroit criminal defense attorney David S. Steingold, of The Steingold & Dwyer Law Group, marks 35 years practicing law and fighting for the rights of his clients.

“I began practicing law in 1979 as a criminal defense attorney. It is the only job I ever wanted, and the only one I will ever have,” said Steingold, who has the highest rating issued by Martindale-Hubbell, the preeminent company that has rated lawyers for over 75 years, which he has retained for more than 35 years. “It was my goal, and it is my goal now, to help the underprivileged, the falsely accused, and anyone else who sought my assistance in combating the system, which seeks to oppress them. I view myself as a foot soldier to the Constitution, and my intention is to continue on my march until I am no longer able.”

During the course of his 35-year career, Steingold has won acquittals in dozens of significant state and federal trials and has represented individuals in several high-publicity cases. Steingold has been featured in several legal publications and television shows, both national and local. He appeared on such shows as Geraldo, The Today Show and 60 Minutes.

“Watching David in trial is surreal, like a script. The way he uses facts, logic, medical records, conflicting statements and every tool to prove his points is a talent that not all attorneys have,” said client Tom. “I watched him prove prosecutors and witnesses wrong to help prove my innocence and recommend him to anyone needing an attorney, especially for a severe case.”

In addition to criminal defense, Steingold also represents clients in complex civil litigation. He currently represents several local businesses, including Leonard Fountain Syrups.
