Hakim files for seat on 39th District Court

Lifelong resident of Roseville and attorney, Alyia Marie Hakim, has become the first candidate to file nominating petitions to run for judge of the 39th District Court.

On Jan. 23, Hakim filed the maximum number of required signatures with the Michigan Bureau of Elections to become a candidate for the open seat vacated by Judge Marco Santia who will be retiring this year. To date, Hakim has been endorsed by more than 40 local judges.

“I am running for judge because I understand the needs of our community and have the experience for the job. I’m excited about this opportunity and believe in firm and fair justice under the law,” said Hakim. “As judge, I will stand up for families and seniors, and will continue my work to end the opioid crisis.”

Hakim has been practicing law in courtrooms in metro Detroit for more than 11 years, specializing in the type of cases that are heard in district court. She focuses on estate planning, juvenile law, defense, and family law. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan University and a Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University Law School.

An active member of the community, Hakim is involved several local organizations, including the Roseville Optimist Club, Eastpointe-Roseville Chamber of Commerce, and MyCare Health Center where she serves as board president. She also serves on the board of directors for Sobriety Today Our Purpose (S.T.O.P) which is affiliated with the 39th District Court Sobriety Court, and as board secretary for the Macomb County Community Drug Courts. Hakim is the volunteer "Ask a Lawyer" at the Senior Center at the Recreational Authority of Roseville and Eastpointe and is an active member of St. Pio of Pietrelcina Catholic Church.
