On May 2, high school students from Cody Academy of Public Leadership participated in the sixth session of the Honigman Academy, a legal and business institute formed by Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn in Detroit. The program was led by Bob Kubic, chief operating officer at Honigman, and introduced the students to various behind-the-scenes departments that keep a law firm running smoothly, including marketing, public relations, human resources, finance, IT, and facilities. In addition to an overview of department functions, the session featured an interactive LEGO exercise designed to demonstrate the importance of effective communication for any occupation. The Honigman Academy was created through a partnership with United Way for Southeastern Michigan and seeks to expose participants to the full spectrum of legal and business disciplines required for a corporate law firm to operate, according to Kubic. The initiative is part of United Way’s College and Career Pathways program, which aims to prepare students for college and a career after they graduate.
