Ground-breaking immigration attorney to deliver Oct. 25 Cohen lecture at Wayne Law

Ground-breaking immigration attorney Stephen W. Manning will deliver the two-part I. Goodman Cohen Lecture in Trial Advocacy at Wayne State University Law School on Thursday, Oct. 25.

The afternoon lecture, “Relentlessly Winning: Five Things I Learned (the hard way) in High Impact Asylum Litigation,” will be from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

The evening lecture, “Massive Law at Sites of Resistance: A Theory, a Framework and a Platform for Defending the Rule of Law in Hostile Locations,” will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Both events are free and open to the public, but registration is required.

The events will be in the Law School’s Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium.

Manning is founding partner of Immigrant Law Group PC in Portland, Oregon, and founder and director of the Innovation Law Lab, a non-profit that combines technology and litigation to create next-generation activism against the mass incarceration of refugees and immigrants. He has received multiple national awards recognizing his impact on immigration law and litigation. In 2017, the Financial Times awarded him its Legal Innovator of the Year Award.

The I. Goodman Cohen Lecture in Trial Advocacy was established by the family of the late I. Goodman Cohen, a prominent trial lawyer who was active in the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association, known today as the Michigan Association for Justice.

Join peers in honoring Hon. Robert J. Colombo, Jr., chief judge, Third Judicial Circuit Court, at the 14th Annual Dennis W. Archer Public Service Award Gala.

It will be held from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, November 8 at the Detroit Yacht Club, 1 Riverbank Rd. in Detroit. Archer Award winners all have one thing in common — each is an attorney or jurist who exemplifies the ideal of the law as public service. Proceeds will fund free legal clinics and community outreach programs.
