Judge Denise Page Hood to receive Purple Sport Coat Award

Family and friends of the Honorable Kaye Tertzag will host the tenth annual Tertzag Tribute Dinner on Thursday, February 28 at 5 p.m. at Park Place Banquet Hall, 23400 Park Street in Dearborn. Tickets are $50 each or $350 per table of eight and include appetizers, dinner and an open bar.

Judge Tertzag passed away on February 4, 2009, having established a legacy of integrity and service to Michigan, as well as a great example of love and devotion to his family and legion of friends. The Tertzag Tribute Dinner preserves and honors his memory. Organizers invite attorneys and elected officials on both sides of the aisle in what has become a premier event in the legal community.

The recipient of this year’s Purple Sport Coat Award is Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Denise Page Hood. Hood completed her undergraduate work at Yale and received her law degree from Columbia. She started her legal career as an attorney in the City of Detroit Law Department, then became a judge in three different state courts — 36th District Court, Recorder’s Court and Wayne County Circuit Court (where she served with Judge Tertzag) before being appointed to the federal bench in 1994. She was appointed chief judge in 2015 and oversees courts in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Port Huron and Bay City. Well-known throughout the community as a longtime crusader of equal justice for all under the law and dedicating her professional career to public service, the award committee said Hood is the perfect choice for this year’s award.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Lita Popke will be the keynote speaker. Popke completed her undergraduate work at Saint Mary’s College and received her law degree from the University of Detroit School of Law. She started her legal career practicing commercial litigation and fidelity and surety law. Popke served with Judge Tertzag on the Wayne County Circuit Court when she became a judge in 2000. She currently serves on the Business Court, where she oversees both civil and commercial cases and previously served in the family division. She has performed dedicated service on several committees and associations, including as Business Court representative for the American Bar Association, President of the Michigan Judges Association and currently on Schoolcraft College’s Development Board Authority.
