“Virtual” became the new norm in all walks of life during the coronavirus pandemic, and running events were no exception.

The annual Race Judicata, presented each fall by the Oakland County Bar Association, was staged last year in virtual form.

This year, the 42nd annual event took place “in-person” on October 10 at Covington Middle School in Bloomfield Hills, just a short trek from the race’s previous home at the former Andover High School. The move produced a “kinder and gentler” race course for running and walking participants, eliminating some of the “very stiff hills” that spiced the 5-kilometer route from the old Andover site, according to officials with the OCBA.

Christopher Haboian took top honors in the 5-km run, crossing in 20:51 for a 6:43 per mile pace over the 3.1-mile distance. Stephen Dunn was runner-up, finishing four seconds behind in 20:55. Patrick Moore placed third in 20:56, while Hallam Stanton was fourth (21:03) and Justin Weiner fifth (21:24).

In the women’s race, Melissa Moore was the first place finisher in 24:22. Ashleigh Wagner earned runner-up honors with a 24:36 effort. Taking third was Sarah McAfee in 24:43, while Hannah Haines was fourth (27:44) and Grace Dersa fifth in 28:20.

Winning the team event was the running squad from Jaffe, a contingent that included Matt Murphy, Sam Schiffer, Christopher Haboian, and Marko Belej.

The premier sponsor of the event was Dean Fulkerson. Supporting sponsors included Dickinson Wright, Harness IP, and Kitch Drutchas Wagner Valitutti & Sherbrook.

The Race Judicata, of course, is an event which features a play on words of the time-honored legal maxim that “repeated reexamination of adjudicated disputes is not in society’s interest.”
