36th District Court celebrates July as Juror Appreciation Month

The 36th District Court is celebrating Juror Appreciation Month during July to recognize city of Detroit residents who have completed jury duty and to highlight the honor and importance of serving on a jury.

Throughout the month activities will include airing of the court's jury service video, "Jurors in Paradise," and "36th District Court: Justice for All" a video production that presents an overview of the court as well as highlights a few of the court's award winning programs -- the Handgun Intervention Program, Drug Treatment Court and the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.

In addition to light morning refreshments, jurors will receive a copy of the resolution issued by the Michigan Supreme Court, bookmarks imprinted with a juror appreciation message and thank-you letters from Chief Judge Marylin E. Atkins.

They will also receive court engraved ink pens, hand sanitizers and informative publications such as How to Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft, Teenagers and the Law, STEP Program - Freedom through Expungement and MICAFE Michigan's Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly.

According to Chief Judge Marylin E. Atkins, the objective of Juror Appreciation Month is to show past and prospective jurors that their contributions are greatly appreciated by the court. A member of the bench will greet the jurors daily and thank them for serving.

"Jury service is a vital aspect of our government," said Judge Atkins. "When you serve as juror, you not only serve your country, but you serve as an integral part of the justice system."

"We want every juror to feel appreciated and to know how much we value their time and commitment to our system of justice," Atkins said. We would also like to thank the many private companies, government agencies, small businesses, school districts, and all those who encourage and support their employees when they are called to jury service.

"We depend on your service -- thank you for doing your duty!"
