The 53rd annual Michigan in Perspective: The Local History Conference will be held March 25-26, 2011, at the Michigan State University Management Education Center in Troy. The conference is presented by the Historical Society of Michigan, the event’s lead sponsor. Other major sponsors include Meijer, Inc. and the Detroit Historical Society.
Organized by the Michigan in Perspective Planning Committee, the conference will feature several keynote speakers and breakout sessions focused on local history in Michigan. Hank Meijer, co-chairman of Meijer, Inc., will present the opening keynote, Meijer at 77: Growing Up in Michigan. Other keynotes include The Story of Adam and Sarah Crosswhite by Bryan and Shannon Prince; Preserving Ford’s Highland Park Plant by Debbie Schutt, president of Schutt & Co.; and Reimagining Detroit by Detroit Free Press writer John Gallagher.
Breakout sessions will cover topics such as local history, genealogy, women’s history, cultural diversity and industrial history. They include:

Open to anyone interested in state or regional history, registration for the two-day event is $35 ($45 after March 16). Meals which feature keynote speakers, including lunch on both days and breakfast on Saturday, are available by reservation on a space-available basis. The conference will close with a Friday evening reception, sponsored by the Detroit Historical Society. Held at the Troy Historical Village, the reception is free for all registered conference attendees, but tickets are required. Tickets can be secured during the conference registration process.
