George “Jay” Quist named to Kent Probate Court

Gov. Rick Snyder  announced Wednesday the appointment of George “Jay” Quist to the Kent County Probate Court, where he will be assigned to serve in the Circuit Court’s Family Division. The appointment fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Nanaruth Carpenter.

“Jay Quist has proven himself to be a hard working administrative law judge capable of managing a very busy docket with careful attention to detail and what the law requires,” Snyder said. “I am confident that he will bring that same work ethic, approach, integrity, and fairness to this new position.”

Quist, of Grand Rapids, started his legal career as a civil litigator with the Grand Rapids law firm Kluczynski, Girtz & Vogelzang and then joined the firm of Roberts Betz & Bloss. He was appointed to the Workers’ Compensation Board of Magistrates in 1999 and then as chief magistrate in January of 2011. This summer, Quist was then tapped to serve as director of employment services for the Michigan Administrative Hearing System in the state’s Department of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs.

Quist graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School. He furthered his education at Hope College, earning a bachelor’s degree, and then at George Washington University in DC, where he earned his law degree.  A Kent County native, Quist is married to Courtney; they have one son, Jonathan.

Quist will stand for election in 2012 to complete the last four years of the judicial term, which expires in 2016.
