Gov. Snyder appoints two Varnum attorneys to State of Michigan boards

Gov. Rick Snyder appointed Varnum attorney Barbra Homier to the Michigan Board of Accountancy, pending the approval of the state Senate, and Varnum attorney Carl Ver Beek to a four-year term on the Michigan Board of Nursing Home Administrators.

The nine-member Michigan Board of Accountancy oversees licensure and certification requirements for certified public accountants and public accounting firms.

Homier is a partner within the trial practice group at Varnum LLP, specializing in family law. Prior to obtaining her law degree, Homier was a securities paralegal at Jackson National Life. She has a law degree from Michigan State University’s Detroit College of Law.

Each Michigan Board of Accountancy member represents a different interest of accountancy, and Homier will represent the public. Each member serves a four-year term.
The Michigan Board of Nursing Home Administrators, also composed of nine members, is responsible for determining minimal entry-level requirements for nursing home administrators in Michigan.

Carl Ver Beek, who was selected to represent the general public, was among three appointments to the board, including Kathleen Hanert of Grayling, who will represent licensed nursing home administrators, and Kimberly Kimbrough-Wozniak of Muskegon, who will represent nursing home administrators.

Ver Beek has significant experience as a labor and employment and dispute resolution attorney with a specific focus on representing nursing homes across the state. Ver Beek is the Chair of the Holland Home Board of Directors, the largest senior care organization in Michigan, where he has served for more than 20 years. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Labor and Employment Division of the State Bar of Michigan, and a Hope College Distinguished Alumni Award. He holds a bachelor's from Hope College and a degree from the Indiana University School of Law.
