Governor Snyder recognizes Michigan Dispute Resolution Day

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and Senator Rick Jones, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, have signed a tribute declaring October 17th  as Dispute Resolution Day.

Michigan Public Act 260 of 1988, known as the Community Dispute Resolution Act, authorized the establishment of Community Dispute Resolution Centers throughout Michigan under the oversight and administration of the Michigan Supreme Court. The State Court Administrative Office’s Office of Dispute Resolution oversees 18 centers throughout the state, which provide alternative dispute resolution services, including mediation, arbitration, facilitation, restorative practices, collaborative decision making, and other responses to conflict for Michigan citizens, schools and businesses.

The conflict resolution process empowers individuals, families, communities, organizations, and businesses to foster communication and devise solutions that are acceptable to the needs and interests of all parties involved. It is taught and practiced by citizens in many school systems, community colleges, universities, law schools and graduate programs, throughout Michigan and the world, as a way of solving disputes and also as a means toward achieving a more peaceful society.

The Tribute recognizes the Community Dispute Resolution Centers for providing opportunities to increase public understanding of peaceful and constructive ways to resolve interpersonal and intergroup conflicts. Community based programs fairly and equitably resolve  interpersonal and intergroup conflicts.

The Dispute Resolution Center of West Michigan is at 678 Front Ave. NW, Suite 250 in Grand Rapids. (Zip is 49504.) The Executive Director is Christine Gilman, and the organization’s phone number is 616-774-0121. The Dispute Resolution Center is continually seeking new volunteer mediators, and its  website, http://drcwm.org, says that the center typically offers a community mediation training course once per year.
