 Miller Johnson’s Portinga elected president of Federal Bar Association, Western District of Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Andy Portinga was elected President of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) for the Western District of Michigan at their fall conference on September 26, 2014.

Portinga practices in the areas of general civil litigation, insurance coverage litigation, ERISA litigation and appellate litigation. He is co-chair of the firm’s ERISA litigation practice. He received his J. D. from the University of Michigan Law School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College.
 
In addition to the FBA, Mr. Portinga has a long-standing history of active leadership with the State Bar of Michigan, where he has served on the character and fitness committee. He has also served as Treasurer of the Grand Rapids Bar Association. He is active with the Defense Research Institute and the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE).

Mr. Portinga was named as Best Lawyers 2014 Grand Rapids Litigation - ERISA Lawyer of the Year. He is listed in “Best Lawyers in America®” for Appellate Practice, Insurance Law, and Litigation – ERISA. He is also named as a Michigan “Super Lawyer” in business litigation and was selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers–Rising Stars Edition 2008.
 
The Western District of Michigan chapter of the Federal Bar Association is a professional  organization for private and government lawyers who practice in the United States District Court  for the Western District of Michigan.
Also included among its members are judges from the  Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Western District of Michigan, the United States Attorney for the Western District of Michigan and the Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Michigan. They offer continuing legal education opportunities, the annual Hillman Trial Skills  Workshop and an award winning newsletter, the Bar & Bench.
