Varnum tax attorney Eric Nemeth is a featured presenter on a recently-released webcast that provides an inside look into the IRS appeals process. The webcast, taped in studio in a moderated interview format, is offered through the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) website and cosponsored by the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

Based on the premise that contesting a case through the IRS appeals process is one of the most efficient, cost effective and practical ways to resolve a controversy with the IRS, the presentation includes information on how to work with the appeals officer, resolve ongoing tax controversies favorably and avoid common mistakes.

Nemeth, a veteran tax and financial controversy attorney and chair of Varnum's tax team, has more than 20 years of experience representing clients before the IRS and state tax regulators in matters including examinations, appellate conferences, criminal investiga-tions, witness representation and civil and criminal tax litigation.

Nemeth formerly served as Senior Trial Attorney for the District Counsel of the IRS and as Special Assistant U.S. attorney for the Department of Justice. He teamed up with IRS Appeals Officer Laura Buus to co-present the webcast.
The webcast, which runs 56 minutes, is available to ICLE premium members and for purchase to non-members at www.icle.org/modules/About/bio.aspx?&Pnumber=P42925 and click on the bottom title, “Tax Law Series: An Inside Look into the IRS Appeals Process.”
