Elder Law of Michigan to receive Courage to Speak Award

Elder Law of Michigan has been awarded the prestigious "Courage to Speak" award by the Oakland County SAVE Taskforce. Elder Law of Michigan is recognized for its work and leadership in elder abuse prevention at the state and national levels. Elder Law's staff of legal and prevention specialists work with clients and professionals to create awareness and provide resources such as training to help address this crisis. Elder Law of Michigan has been instrumental in working for the passage of legislation to protect seniors from elder abuse and engaging a broad spectrum of professionals in this work. Elder Law is a voice for these victims. To mark the event, Elder Law is making a special announcement. "Today we are pleased to announce that we have secured the resources to send six additional judges and/or prosecutors to the Judicial Institute to expand their skills in identifying and working with victims," said Kate White, Executive Director. "Judges and prosecutors interested in attending the training, to be held in September, should contact Ron Tatro at 517.853.2399 or rtatro@elderlawofmi.org." said White. Each year over 90,000 Michiganians age 65 or older are injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection. ELM has responded with a Video Advocacy Project and Consumer Fraud Prevention Project, in addition to its law enforcement training. There are resources available to train judges and prosecutors on prevention issues. The Oakland County SAVE (Serving Adults who are Vulnerable and/or Elderly) Task Force exists to increase awareness abuse throughout Oakland County while promoting coordinating services for abused, neglected, and exploited vulnerable adults.
