Monday Profile: Lee Reimann

 

Lee Reimann is managing partner of Willingham & Cote, P.C. in East Lansing.  She is the chair of the firm’s Estate and Gift team as well as Business and Corporate Law team.  Reimann, who has an extensive business background, is also a certified public accountant, and counsels individuals and businesses on forming, growing, selling and transitioning commercial enterprises. She also advises clients on estate planning matters.

Reimann is a past president of the Ingham County Bar Association, Greater Lansing Estate Planning Council and the Rotary Club of East Lansing, and is now on the Board of Directors of Legal Services of South Central Michigan, and on the East Lansing Planning Commission.  She lives in East Lansing with her husband Chris and two wirehaired Vizslas, Odin and Topher.  They have two adult sons, Burke and Clay.

What is your most treasured material possession? My Raggedy Ann that I received for Christmas when I was about 5.
 
What advice do you have for someone considering law school?  “Work in a law office for a year—in any position—to see if you really want to practice law.  It’s a big investment of time and money.”
 
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be? An interior designer.
 
Favorite local hangouts: MSU University Club; Nu Fashion Nails.
 
Your proudest moment(s) as a lawyer? The day when a father and husband wept and thanked me for pushing him to complete his estate planning to protect his family. Yes, people can be thankful for documents.
 
What is your happiest childhood memory? Summers in Chautauqua, NY.
 
What’s your greatest achievement? Raising my two boys to be healthy, happy, caring adults.
 
At Thanksgiving dinner, would you rather talk politics, religion or the weather? The weather.
 
What would you say to your 16-year-old self?  “Don’t try so hard to fit in; that’s not where the joy is.”
 
What one thing do you wish people knew about your work? Getting your estate planning together is not that hard, not that complicated and not that expensive. But the peace of mind that one has when it is done is amazing.
 
Favorite joke: I don’t know, but it is definitely not a lawyer joke!
 
If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be? Reality TV.
 
Must-see TV: “Property Brothers” on HGTV.
 
What word do you overuse? Really?
 
 
First gig: Bank teller at a local bank in New Jersey.
 
If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be? Jane Austen, Susan B. Anthony and Mae West.
 
Who is your favorite character of fiction? Elizabeth Bennett.
 
Favorite movie: “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
 
Favorite law-related movie: “Body Heat.” Got to love the rule against perpetuities.
 
Favorite place to spend money: Auctions.
 
What is your motto? “Go big or go home.”
 
Where would you like to be when you're 90? Above ground.
