Get to Know Kory K. Shimek

Kory K. Shimek grew up in Maple City, 20 minutes west of Traverse City in Leelanau County, or—as he puts it—“the most beautiful place in the world.”

 He earned a BBA from Davenport University, and graduated cum laude from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2014.

Shimek owns and operates his own practice in Taylor, where he practices divorce, bankruptcy, probate, criminal, and social security disability law.

He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the American Bar Association, the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, and the Downriver Bar Association. 

He is engaged to be married this July to his fiancée, Jennifer.

What is your most treasured material possession? A tie between my MacBook and my mountain bike.

What advice do you have for someone considering law school? Make sure that your heart is in it 100 percent before taking on the task, and speak to practicing attorneys in the areas of law you want to work in.

What is your proudest moment as a lawyer? When I was able to help a much deserving family with a step-parent adoption case. It was a very happy and emotional ending for the family and me.

Favorite local hangouts: Greenfield Village, Slows BBQ, Comerica Park, and all Michigan state parks.

What is your happiest childhood memory? Working on my family’s cherry orchard in Leelanau County during the summer harvest.

What would surprise people about your job?
Because I am the owner of my firm, I think the amount of time I spend on managerial tasks instead of doing work for my clients would surprise people the most.

What do you wish someone would invent? A Transporter – like from “Star Trek.”

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that be?
I would trade places with an astronaut working on the International Space Station.

What’s the most awe-inspiring place you’ve ever been? Niagara Falls.

If you could have one super power, what would it be?
I would love to have the ability to fly. 

What would you say to your 16-year-old self? You must learn to stay focused and how to manage your time effectively—do those two things and you will do excellent work.

What do you do to relax? Being outdoors really helps me relax.

What word do you overuse? I probably use the words “cool” and “awesome” way too much. It’s a generational thing.

What is one thing you would like to learn to do? Learn how to speak another language fluently.

If you can help it, where will you never return? I-75 north of Detroit during rush hour.

What is something most people don't know about you? I’m related to Josiah Bartlett, representative of New Hampshire in the Continental Congress who voted for independence, and was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence, after John Hancock.

What’s the most exciting thing in your personal life right now?
I’m getting married to the love of my life in July, and then we’re traveling to Rome, Amsterdam, and London for our honeymoon.

What’s the most exciting thing professionally?
I just finished a 12-day custody trial that I’m awaiting an opinion on.

Favorite place to spend money: REI.
