Thursday Profile: John Nicolucci

John Nicolucci, a shareholder with Foster, Swift, Collins & Smith, P.C. in Lansing, serves as a member of the firm’s General Litigation Practice Group and as the leader of the firm’s Family Law Practice Sub-Group.  

His practice includes a wide range of complex commercial litigation, insurance defense, insurance regulatory, and family law matters.
 
Nicolucci is president of the Ingham County Sobriety Court Foundation and a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s United States Courts Committee. He speaks and writes on topics concerning family law, insurance defense and trial practice.

What is your most treasured material possession?  
Family photographs and golf clubs.
 
What advice do you have for someone considering law school?  
You can never go wrong with earning an advanced educational degree.
 
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be?  
Golf analyst – CBS Sports or the Golf Channel.
 
Proudest moments as a lawyer?  
Presenting oral arguments before the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court.
 
What’s the most awe inspiring place you have visited?  
The Taj Mahal.
 
 
What one thing do you wish people knew about your work?  One’s mind never wanders far from your cases, your clients and the issues to be addressed.
 
If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?  On a global setting:  war, conflict and hunger.  Closer to home:  slow drivers in the left lane.
 
Must-see TV:  
Comedies:  “Modern Family” and “Seinfeld.” Sports:  “The Masters Golf Tournament” and “March Madness.”
 
First gig:  
Golf caddy in seventh grade at Hillcrest Country Club in Indianapolis.
 
If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be?  
Jesus Christ, Warren Buffet and Tiger Woods.
 
Favorite movie:
Comedy: “Happy Gilmore.” Adventure: James Bond series. Historical fiction:  “The English Patient.” History:  “Apollo 13.”
 
Favorite law-related movie:  
“12 Angry Men.”
 
What place won’t you return to if you can help it?  
Any of the jails where I have gone to meet with clients.
 
What is your motto?  
Though I cannot claim credit for creating it, the Nike advertising motto “Just Do It!” resonates with me.
