Shirkey to host town hall meeting on crowdfunding

Small-business owners and people looking to start a business are encouraged to attend a special town hall meeting in Jackson on Thursday, Feb. 27 to learn about equity crowdfunding techniques established through a new state law.

State Rep. Mike Shirkey is sponsoring the event, which takes place at the Jackson Tower Building, 120 W. Michigan Ave., from 5-6:30 p.m. The town hall is open to the public, but will be of particular interest to Jackson area inventors, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, start-up companies and business incubators.
“Equity crowdfunding is an innovative way to secure the financial resources necessary to expand or start a new business,” said Shirkey, a small-business owner. “Anyone interested in growing their business or people with an entrepreneurial spirit are encouraged to attend this informative event.”
The governor recently signed legislation into law that establishes equity crowdfunding in Michigan and allows small-business owners and start-ups to secure funds from investors in exchange for shares of ownership in the company.
Angela Barbash of Reconsider, which provides best practices for running a successful campaign; and Thomas Coke of VerifyValid, a provider of electronic checks that can be used to facilitate crowdfunding and other business payments, are scheduled to speak at the meeting.
“Job providers can use the power of the Internet to grow and expand their businesses, creating jobs for local residents,” said Shirkey, R-Clarklake. “With our new state law, equity crowdfunding has become a viable option worth exploring.”
The meeting is free. Reservations are not required. Call Rep. Shirkey’s office at (517) 373-1775, or e-mail him at MikeShirkey@house.mi.gov with any questions.
