Celebration: Jackson BPW honors achievements of local women

Local entrepreneur Rosalie Jonas of Rosalie's Sweet Treats in Summit Township, who makes custom baked goods and candies in her home, has been honored with the 2015 BPW Nike Award by the Jackson Business and Professional Women.

The BPW Nike award recognizes a woman-owned business for its work to make Jackson a better place, and for accomplishments as an entrepreneur.

The Nike Award is based on the attributes of Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory. The recipient receives a model of the "Nike of Samothrace" statue.

Retired Jackson Public Schools elementary teacher Donna Lake is the BPW 2015 Athena Recipient. . She taught hearing impaired children for 12 years, grades K-6, then finished her career by teaching fourth-grade students for 20 years.

Angela Machnik, Jackson BPW Treasurer as well as Chamber of Commerce Events Director, is one of two recipients of the 2015 Susan B. Anthony Award given by the Jackson Women's History Council. A BPW member, Machnik organizes the Chamber of Commerce annual MLK Diversity Breakfast in January and the Challenge Day Event in November. The MLK Diversity Breakfast/Challenge Day committee brings 25 7th grade students from 18 participating Jackson County school districts together to be part of the Challenge Day workshop. Through her efforts, Machnik has brought awareness of diversity and bullying issues to the larger community.

Machnik also serves on the Career Explorations Luncheons committee for the Jackson County Cradle-to-Career initiative, as well as the planning committee for the Create. Launch. Grow Entrepreneurial Conference.

Through the Chamber of Commerce, Machnik developed the Leadership Jackson Alumni Associates for the alumni of the Leadership Academy. The mission of the Association is to help alumni continue to develop their knowledge of the community; to sustain their commitment to make a difference in Jackson; and to maintain, develop and utilize relationships with fellow alumni in the cause of improving the quality of life in greater Jackson.

Jackson BPW is one of the largest working women's organizations and is firmly committed to raising public awareness of health and family concerns and legislative issues for women.
