Honoring veterans

Two attorneys to star in upcoming play

Attorneys Nan Elizabeth Casey and her husband Jim Dunn will star in a “Telling Project” play, presented by The Peppermint Creek Theatre Company.

Performances are set 8 p.m., Nov. 5, 6 and 7, and Nov. 12, 13, and 14, and 2 p.m. Nov. 8 and Nov. 15, at the Miller Performance Arts Center, 6025 Curry Lane in Lansing. General admission is $15, and $10 for students, veterans, and ages 65 and over.

The Telling Project, a national organization headquartered in Austin, Texas, selected the theater company as its 13th theatre to engage in a Telling Project play.  It is the only theatre in Michigan so selected.

A press release from the theater notes: “The Telling Project works to deepen our understanding of the military and veteran experience.  Greater understanding fosters receptivity, easing veterans' transition back to civil society, and allows communities to benefit from the skills and experience they bring with them.  Through this understanding, a community deepens its connection to its veterans, itself, and its place in the nation and the world.  Peppermint Creek is thrilled to be the first Michigan theatre to partner with this national organization The Telling Project to bring Lansing area veterans’ stories to the stage.”

The play will reveal how Dunn and Casey have dealt with re-engaging with society after harrowing experiences.  Dunn, who was recently recognized with the John Demmer Award by the Volunteers of America, was an officer in the U.S. Army and earned the rank of captain. He served two tours in Vietnam and another tour in Korea.

He commanded both an infantry company and an artillery battery, among other military duties.

Dunn’s service awards include four Distinguished Flying Crosses; a Bronze Star medal; 32 awards of the Air Medal; three awards of the Air Medal with Valor; a Purple Heart; two awards of the Army Accommodation Medal; the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Commendation Medal; National Defense Service Medal; and a Good Conduct Medal.

Dunn and his wife Nan have dealt with issues that arise from his military experiences.

They along with other veterans will appear in this original production directed by Blake Bowen, co-artistic director of PCTC.

A cum laude graduate of Central Michigan University and Cooley Law School, Casey is an attorney and owner at Nan Elizabeth Casey & Associates PLLC in Lansing, where her practice focuses on mediation, with emphasis on veteran rights, elder law and divorce.  She is a fellow of the Ingham County Bar Foundation.

Dunn, who was previously president of his own law firm, is deputy director of service administration at the Michigan Veterans Affairs Department, and serves as Of Counsel at his wife’s firm.
