TV judge speaks to UDM students

Judge Jeanine Pirro, a nationally-syndicated television court show judge and former district attorney, recently visited University of Detroit Mercy School of Law to discuss her passion for victims’ rights and her experience in the courtroom.
Pirro was an assistant district attorney in Westchester County, New York, before becoming the first female judge to sit on the county court bench. She also was the first female district attorney of Westchester County, serving from 1993 to 2005. Students filled the Moot Court Room at the School of Law to hear Pirro’s presentation and for the opportunity to discuss current issues in the law.  “It’s all about victims’ rights for me,” she began. “That’s my perspective on the law.”
Her commitment to protecting victims was clear as she told stories about her time as a prosecutor and as a judge.
“Victims don’t have rights,” she argued. “Criminals have rights.  We’ve got to do something for crime victims, so we don’t end up losing them, too.”
A focus of Pirro’s career has been the protection of women and children in domestic violence and sexual crimes.
Referencing current publicized court cases such as the Chris Brown assault and battery case and the David Letterman extortion case, Pirro encouraged students to recognize that the goal of any trial should be to uncover the truth.
“It’s not a game,” she reminded them. “You’re developingthe skills here to truly help people.”
The Judge Jeanine Pirro show is broadcast locally on WKBD/CW50 weekdays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
