Macomb County’s new Business Court was the topic of a recent seminar sponsored by the Macomb County Bar Association. Speakers included (left to right) LIsa Ellis, chief of speciality court services with Macomb County Circuit Court; Linda McGrail Belau, partner with O’Reilly Rancilio PC, which sponsored the seminar along with ASG Investigations; Circuit Court Judge John Foster; and Jennifer Phillips, court administrator. Foster oversees the initiative, which he said is the first business docket established in any circuit court in the state. Foster said complaints have been received that courts treat businesses as they do any other kind of negligence, small contract or collection problem and that “they string out cases that a lot of business attorneys and business owners and participants think should be dealt with in a much more expedient way.” The judge said the special docket will allow the court “to get involved early in the case, see what it’s all about and try to work with the attorneys and the parties to resolve the case in a more expeditious manner.”
