Court to determine if price-fixing lawsuit OK

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court will consider whether the state of Mississippi can bring a state-level lawsuit in a global LCD screen price-fixing conspiracy.

The justices recently agreed to hear an appeal from state officials in their lawsuit against AU Optronics Corp.

A federal jury last year found the company guilty of price-fixing on its liquid crystal display screens. Mississippi also wanted to sue in state court.

But the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to send that lawsuit back, instead allowing it to stay in federal courts. Four other states, however, have been allowed to bring state-level lawsuits against the Taiwan company.

Several companies from Japan, Korea and Taiwan were accused of fixing prices for thin film transistor LCD panels from 1999 to 2006.

Graduate student fined for wearing feather

ATMORE, Ala. (AP) — An American Indian student says she’s being fined $1,000 for wearing a feather on her mortarboard when she graduated from high school in south Alabama in late May.

Chelsey Ramer tells WPMI-TV that she feels like she’s being discriminated against by her alma mater, Escambia Academy in Atmore.

The 17-year-old is part of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, and she says she wore a feather at graduation last month to honor her heritage.

The school now is making Ramer pay a $1,000 fine to get her diploma and official transcript. She’s accused of violating school policy.

A school contract says students and staff are not allowed to wear extra items during graduation unless they’re approved in advance by the administration.

Secretary of State offers video at branch offices

LANSING (AP) — Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says her department is introducing a video network at motor vehicle branch offices.

Johnson says that the video system involves no cost to taxpayers and includes advertising along with educational content, news, sports and weather.

Johnson says she has a three-year agreement with Motor Vehicle Network to provide the content on large, high-definition monitors in branch offices.

She says more than half the offices now have them, and more will get them soon.

The Norwalk, Conn.-based Motor Vehicle Network, offers programming without audio. It also can post real-time Amber Alerts and other emergency announcements.
