PHOTO #1: The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law's chapter of the American Inns of Court hosted its Annual Meeting this month at the Detroit Athletic Club. The event recognized U.S. District Court Judge Patrick J. Duggan (far left), Eastern District of Michigan, for his many years of service as president of the Inn (1999-2014) and as a Master of the Bench (1986-2014).  Last year, the Inn conferred him the title of Master of the Bench-Emeritus. Happy to congratulate Duggan were (left to right) U.S. District Court Judge Laurie Michelson (Inn counselor), Dan Bernard (Inn president), UDM Law Dean Phyllis Crocker, U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain and UDM Law Prof. Gary Maveal.

PHOTO #2: Also taking part in the Annual Meeting were (front row, left to right) Jim Howarth, UDM Law Prof. Gary Maveal, Michelle Vocht, U.S. District Court Judges Laurie Michelson and Patrick Duggan, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Lemisch; along with (back row, left to right) U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain, Steve Kelley, UDM Law Dean Phyllis Crocker, Frank Eaman, and Dan Bernard. Founded in 1984 by U.S. District Court Judge Julian A. Cook Jr. and Dean Bernard Dobranski, the Law School's Inn was the eleventh Inn of Court chartered by the American Inns of Court Foundation. Modeled upon the Inns of Court of London, the Inn of Court involves judges and lawyers (“Masters of the Bench”) teaching advocacy, civility, and professionalism both to young lawyers (“Barristers”) and law students (“Pupils”).
