Detroit Mercy Law schedules Red Mass

University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will host its104th annual Red Mass at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church in downtown Detroit.

Red Mass is an opportunity for law students, judges, lawyers, civic leaders, faculty, staff and administrators of all faiths to come together and celebrate the beginning of the new judicial term and academic year.

The School has hosted the Red Mass on behalf of the Archdiocese of Detroit at Saints Peter and Paul since the School opened in 1912.

The oath is recited by all new lawyers in the State of Michigan as a mandatory part of swearing-in ceremonies. Renewal of the oath is a voluntary means of reaffirming the pledge made at the onset of a lawyer’s career.

This year, it will be led by U.S. District Court Judge Victoria A. Roberts, Eastern District of Michigan.

The celebrant of the mass will be Rev. Fred Kammer, a priest, attorney, and a member of the Southern Province of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits).
