Adoption Day ceremony set for county courthouse

With the theme of “Giving Thanks for Families,” courts across the state are finalizing plans to celebrate Adoption Day.

In downtown Mt. Clemens, Michigan Supreme Court Justice David F. Viviano will officiate at an adoption event Tuesday, Nov.22 at the Macomb County Courthouse, 40 N. Main.

Viviano served on the Macomb Court Circuit Court bench for seven years before he was appointed to the high court by Gov. Rick Snyder in 2013.

Michigan celebrates Adoption Day each year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving with observances aimed at highlighting the importance of adoption and the needs of children in foster care.

Courts around Michigan will finalize adoptions while others plan informational events to reach potential adoptive parents.

In another observance Tuesday in the Supreme Court courtroom in Lansing, Chief Justice Robert P. Young, Jr. will join Monroe County Judges Cheryl Lohmeyer and Frank Arnold, along with Kent County Judge Kathleen Feeney, in finalizing adoptions.

Michigan Adoption Day is co-sponsored by the Michigan Supreme Court, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Child Welfare Services division of the State Court Administrative Office, and Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange.

President Obama has declared November to be National Adoption Month.
