Wayne Law unveils scholarship crowdfunding effort

As part of the fifth annual global celebration #GivingTuesday to celebrate and encourage giving, Wayne State University Law School will launch its first-ever crowdfunding campaign Tuesday, Nov. 29 to create a new need-based scholarship fund.

Three alumni, Wayne Law’s interim dean and a law student have signed on to provide matching gifts at various levels to help the law school reach its $15,000 goal.

Wayne Law is inviting alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students and community members to give back with gifts through the university’s crowdfunding website for the daylong drive for the #WayneLawGives scholarship fund.

School officials said gifts will be accepted at warriorfunder.wayne.edu/waynelawgives from midnight through 11:59 p.m. that day.

Those who prefer to make a donation by phone can call 313.577.9763 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. that day.

Recipients of the #WayneLawGives scholarship will be able to use these funds to help make up a gap not covered by their other scholarships or financial aid, according to school officials.

For the third year in a row, Wayne Law has been recognized as a “Best Value Law School” by The National Jurist and preLaw magazine. However, school officials say most students still rely on scholarships and student loans to cover the cost of their tuition and fees.

Thanks to the generosity of early donors, the law school was able to raise the required $5,000 (one-third of its goal) to launch the crowdfunding campaign.

The following matching gift opportunities are available for donors:

• Interim Dean Lance Gable will personally match any gifts received from faculty and staff up to $5,000.

• Sandy and Jay Colvin, both class of 1989, will match any gifts of $100 or more received from other alumni up to $5,000.

• An alumna will give $100 for every student who gives a gift in the amount of their graduation year (i.e. $20.17 for class of 2017).

• A second-year Wayne Law student will personally match every student gift in the amount of their graduation year (i.e. $20.18 for class of 2018) up to $1,000.

Wayne Law will be promoting the crowdfunding campaign through its website, social media, email and other channels.

“The support we’ve already received from early donors and people offering to provide matching gifts, as well as those helping to promote the campaign, exemplifies the spirit of #GivingTuesday,” said Desirnai’ Hicks, Wayne Law’s leadership annual giving officer and project director for the #WayneLawGives campaign. “We’re looking forward to everything we have planned for Nov. 29 to help us hit our $15,000 goal and provide needed scholarship dollars.”
