Conference examines challenges to religious freedom

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law recently partnered with the J. Reuben Clark Law Society Detroit Chapter and the Michigan Catholic Conference to host an Interfaith Religious Freedom Conference. The event welcomed people of all faiths to explore civic and legal challenges to religious freedom, and practical measures that may be taken to support religious freedom in daily life. The keynote speakers were the Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron (middle row, far right), archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, and Elder Von G. Keetch (back row, far right), General Authority Seventy and executive director of the Public Affairs Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Other featured speakers were Elizabeth Clark (front row, second from left), associate director for the International Center for Law and Religion Studies at Brigham Young University Law School; Christopher Lund (front row, far right), associate professor at Wayne State University Law School; and Frank Ravitch (front row, far left), professor and Walter H. Stowers chair of Law and Religion at Michigan State University College of School. Also on hand for the conference were (front row, left to right) UDM Provost and VP for Academic Affairs Pamela Zarkowski, and Annie Bennett of MI Catholic Conference; along with (middle row) Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis Crocker; in addition to (back row, left to right) Dr. Nicholas Miller, and Elder Daniel Dunnigan.
