Lawsuit over jail birth moves forward with fewer defendants

MOUNT CLEMENS (AP) — A federal lawsuit by a Michigan woman who says she was forced to give birth in a Mount Clemens jail is moving forward with fewer defendants.

The Macomb Daily reports three nurses and Macomb County remain as defendants after U.S. District Court Judge Judith Levy dismissed four medical staffers and the jail’s medical provider as defendants. The judge earlier removed the county’s sheriff as a defendant.

Jessica Preston alleges that Macomb County Jail staff ignored her when she went into labor while being held for driving on a suspended license in 2016.

The lawsuit says Preston delivered her son, Elijah, on a filthy cell floor after pleas to be hospitalized. The county denies Prestons rights were violated.

Lawsuit: Man died after 911 calls for help go unanswered

CANTON TOWNSHIP (AP) — The widow of a man who died after suffering a heart attack is suing two Detroit-area 911 operators after emergency calls were missed because the volume on a 911 line was turned down or off.

Former Canton Township employees Rachel Rowell and Joshua Choroba are named in the suit that seeks $25 million.

It says staff at a health care facility called for an ambulance 13 times on March 1, 2018 for Stephen Greene, 69.

An ambulance was dispatched once the 911 system was turned back on or up and the calls answered. Greene died the next day.

The township’s attorney said the lowered volume caused an 8-minute service delay.

Official: Pennsylvania must replace voting machines

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s top elections official is warning that failing to replace voting machines by 2020 could make the state the only one without a voter-verifiable paper trail.
Kathy Boockvar, Pennsylvania’s acting state secretary, also told state senators this week that election-security experts agree that moving to voting machines that allow voters to double check how their vote was recorded needs to happen by next year.

Boockvar was responding to questions from state Sen. Bob Mensch over why Pennsylvania is rushing to buy machines at considerable taxpayer expense when there’s no legitimate example of a voter irregularity in Pennsylvania.

Gov. Tom Wolf’s push for new machines comes after federal authorities say Russian hackers targeted at least 21 states during the 2016 presidential election.

Burglar crashes car into adult novelty store

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Police in Tulsa are searching for a man who crashed his car into the glass doors of an adult novelty shop, then ran inside and stole lingerie and sex toys.

Police say the heist at Hustler Hollywood happened early Monday when the store was closed. It was captured on video.

Police told Tulsa TV station KOTV that authorities believe the man knew the store’s layout because he ran directly to one section to steal the items, which were valued at about $300 to $400.

The greater cost is likely the damage to the glass doors, according to police.
