Man sentenced for murder in shooting, mutilation of friend
MOUNT CLEMENS (AP) — A 21-year-old man will spend 50 to 70 years in prison for the shooting death and mutilation of his childhood friend.
Andrew Fiacco was sentenced last Thursday. A jury convicted him last month of second-degree murder, using a firearm during a felony, dismemberment and lying to a police officer.
Prosecutors said Fiacco shot 19-year-old Stephen McAfee twice in the head in a remote Bruce Township field in March 2016 then dismembered his body and buried some remains on family property.
In April 2017, Fiacco showed investigators where they could find McAfee’s remains.
Fiacco’s 20-year-old ex-girlfriend, Eevette MacDonald, pleaded guilty to helping cover up McAfee’s death and was sentenced earlier this month to a year in prison and probation.
Michigan cuts loans for some docs going where need is high
DETROIT (AP) — Some newly graduated doctors have an opportunity to decrease their medical school loans if they work where they are most needed in Michigan.
The program announced last week is called MIDOCs and is supported by $5 million in state money. It seeks to lure and keep physicians in the state by offering up to $75,000 in loan repayment in exchange for a two-year, post-residency commitment to work in urban or rural areas with doctor shortages.
Four medical schools — those at Wayne State, Michigan State, Western Michigan and Central Michigan — have been designated two slots apiece for 2019.
Of Michigan’s 83 counties, 90 percent have at least a partial designation as a physician shortage area.
Court won’t referee dispute over photo
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court says it won’t referee a dispute between Nike and a photographer who took a famous image of basketball great Michael Jordan.
The high court declined Monday to hear the copyright case brought by photographer Jacobus Rentmeester.
Rentmeester took a famous photograph of Jordan for Life magazine in 1984. It shows Jordan holding a basketball and leaping toward a basketball hoop. Nike later commissioned a new image that is inspired by Rentmeester’s photo. The logo for Nike’s Air Jordan shoes, called the “Jumpman Logo,” is based off Nike’s photo.
Rentmeester sued Nike saying it had violated copyright law. The high court’s decision not to take the case means lower court rulings against Rentmeester stand.
Philly chilly so nude bike ride postponed
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Naked bicyclists say they were so cold riding around Philadelphia last September that this year they’ll do it in August.
Organizers of the annual Philly Naked Bike Ride say they’ve “ridden in chilly weather” the last two Septembers so this time they'll saddle up Aug. 24 and “hope it's a scorcher!”
Participants in the ride can go as bare as they dare. Some of the cyclists wore their birthday suits accentuated with body paint or glitter while others wore underwear or masks. They pedaled past sights including Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
