Exploring 'Race, Class and Environmental Justice'

The University of Detroit Mercy Law Review hosted its 104th Annual Symposium on March 6. This year’s symposium titled “Race, Class and Environmental Justice” explored issues at the intersection of environmental law and justice. Topics included how the effects of climate change, water quality, natural disasters, and food supply impact marginalized communities. Following the symposium, a cocktail reception took place in the Detroit Mercy Law Atrium featuring a display of local artists’ works created from recycled and environmentally friendly materials. Among those enjoying the reception were (front row, left to right) University of Maryland Carey School of Law Prof. Karen Czapanskiy; Regina Strong, environmental justice public advocate, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy; Symposium Director Bridget Underhill; and Sarah Matsumoto, clinical teaching fellow, University of Denver Sturm College of Law; along with (back row, left to right) Melissa Cooper Sargent, environmental health advocate, Ecology Center; Lauren Bartlett, assistant professor and director of the New Human Rights at Home Litigation Clinic, St. Louis University School of Law; Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis Crocker; Nick Schroeck, associate dean of Experiential Education and associate professor, Detroit Mercy Law; and Wyatt Sassman, assistant professor, University of Denver Sturm College of Law.
