State Bar to launch Agricultural Law Section

The State Bar of Michigan will launch an Agricultural Law Section during the 2012-2013 Bar year. Any active SBM member may request membership in the new section for an annual fee of $25.

The Agricultural Law Section will serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas among members engaged in the practice of law servicing agricultural clients, and will aim to help these attorneys improve the practice of agricultural law, study the statutes and regulations affecting the agricultural community, and improve the quality of legal services provided to the agricultural community in Michigan. It will also serve as a vehicle for communication and networking among attorneys engaged in the practice of this area of law. In order to achieve these goals, the new section will sponsor educational meetings and conferences and support the publication of articles that relate to the purposes of the section.

“Agriculture is the second largest industry in Michigan, and it employs more than one million of our residents and contributes more than $91 billion to our economy each year,” said SBM President Julie Fershtman. “I commend the Michigan lawyers who recognized the importance of agriculture to our state and were committed to creating this new section as a way of helping lawyers better serve this sector of our economy.”

The organizational meeting of the section will be held in January of 2013.
