It didn’t matter that the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson sponsored by the Muskegon YMCA and Safe Kids West Michigan had a fairly low turnout.

That is because the learners were partnering with a whole globe full of people doing the same thing: discovering how to keep themselves safe in the water.

An estimated 45,000 of them.

Organizers included Holly Always, the Mercy Health Injusry Prevention Coordinator and Safe Kids Coordinator and Kelsey Parker, a Communications Intern.

Also in attendance at the Muskegon version of the lesson, held at the Muskegon High School Redmond Potter Gym were YMCA Director Bruce Spoelman and  Muskegon Police Officer there Justin Sunday.

The whole point of the worldwide swimming lesson – held in 29 countries on six continents – is that: 1) drowning is preventable; 2) kids should take lessons so they know how to swim and engage with the water safely; and 3) adults should take a larger role in supervising their children.

The Centers for Disease Control says that drowning is still the largest injury-related cause of death in children 1-4, and research also shows that having no adult nearby is implicated in a majority of those deaths.
