    A recent University of Michigan workshop, hosted by U-M Poverty Solutions, drew more than 50 lawyers, policymakers, students, and coders from around the country to tackle the pressing issue of predatory debt collection and its impact on Michigan’s families and legal system. The driving force behind the event was second-year law student Malcolm Phelan.
    The statistics are staggering: Twenty five percent of Michiganders have a debt in collections, including more than 50 percent of Michiganders of color.

  • Michigan Law professor discusses how to fight disinformation and save democracy

    Disinformation in the U.S. has become so bad that it threatens our democracy, according to Professor from Practice Barbara McQuade, ’91. But she believes we have tools and strategies that have the potential to effectively fight the problem.
    McQuade, a former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, is well known beyond the Law School for her appearances on NBC, MSNBC, and the Sisters in Law podcast. She addresses the problem of disinformation in her new book, “Attack from Within: How Disinformation is Sabotaging America” (Seven Stories Press, 2024).

  • ABA council stays the course on JD-Next admission exams

    The legal education arm of the American Bar Association declined on Feb. 22 to grant the JD-Next admissions test
    parity with the LSAT and the GRE, deciding to continue the policy of issuing variances for its use while collecting more data on its reliability as a predictor of law school outcomes.

  • ABA Criminal Justice Section launches Prosecutorial Independence Task Force

    The Criminal Justice Section of the American Bar Association has announced the creation of the Task Force for Prosecutorial Independence to preserve and strengthen prosecutorial independence and enhance the public’s understanding of the prosecutor’s critical role in maintaining the integrity of the criminal justice system.
