Legal scholar to give Order of the Coif lecture

Wayne State University Law School is pleased to host leading scholar and former dean of the University of Chicago Law School Saul Levmore as the Order of the Coif Distinguished Visitor.

Levmore will present "Precedent and Convergence: Why Are Different Jurisdictions So Similar Even Though Legislatures Are Not Bound by Precedent?" on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 12:15 p.m. in Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Levmore is a renowned academic and currently the William B. Graham Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School, where he was dean from 2001 to 2009.

Prior to joining the University of Chicago faculty in 1998, he was the Brokaw Professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, and a visiting professor at Yale, Harvard, University of Michigan, Northwestern University and University of Chicago.

He has taught courses on torts, corporations, nonprofit organizations, comparative law, public choice, corporate tax, commercial law, insurance, contracts, and copyright. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a past president of the American Law Deans Association, and a trustee of the Law School Admissions Council.

The national office of the Order of the Coif, an honorary legal education scholastic society, sponsors the Distinguished Visitor program to enable chapters to bring eminent members of the legal profession to their campuses. The Distinguished Visitor spends two days at each of the institutions he or she visits, participating in classroom lectures and seminars, meeting informally with faculty and student groups, and giving one address open to the entire academic community.

"We are honored to host a lecture by a scholar of Saul Levmore's prominence and distinction," said Wayne Law Dean Robert M. Ackerman. "His provocative insights will provide an important perspective to our students and other members of the legal community."
