Pontiac Alumni Foundation awards scholarships

The Pontiac Alumni Foundation (PAF) has awarded its 2012 Scholarships to four graduating Pontiac seniors.

Timarshay G. Bracewell was awarded the John Thors Scholarship, named after a former Pontiac teacher and the Pontiac School District Trust Fund Scholarship.  She will be attending Western Michigan studying Psychology.  Bracewell is a 2012 top 10 honors graduate of Pontiac High School. She completed an internship at Oakland University in Chemistry.  She played volleyball for PHS, and traveled with an AAU which had several team successes.   She currently plays volleyball for Skills Finest in Southfield.

Kadeeja’h N. Brewer who will be attending Eastern  Michigan University to study Criminology, was awarded the Robert and Fran Anderson Scholarship.  The Scholarship is named after the late Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Robert Anderson and his wife Fran, an inspiring booster for Pontiac and a highly respected retired Pontiac teacher.  Brewer loves basketball and spending time with her family.

LaTrevia S. Myles, who will be studying pre-Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University, received the Strickland Family Scholarship, named after Luther and Gertrude Strickland whose family is well known in Pontiac for their community contributions.  Myles also received the Katherine L. Mester Memorial Scholarship.  She is also an alumni of the Cranbrook Program for high school attendees.  She loves animals, singing, and spending time with her family.

The fourth scholarship recipient is Taryelle Y. White.  She will be attending Michigan State University studying Biological Science.  White received the Al Dittrich Scholarship.  Dittrich owned a well-known GM automobile dealership and was a long time supporter of Pontiac.  White loves Oreo cookies, playing video games, and watching Japanese Cartoons.

The scholarships were presented on behalf of the PAF by Mike Lavoie, Butzel Long attorney and PAF secretary, along with Steven Fladger, V.P. of the Huttenlocher Insurance Company and PAF treasurer.  Fladger was a member of the Scholarship Committee chaired by Olympic Silver and Gold Medalist Hayes Jones who recently moved to Atlanta but has kept involved with the PAF through his continuing leadership and the Scholarship Committee.

In presenting the scholarships, Fladger acknowledged that the students represent a hope for the future.  “We had an exceptional group of student scholars applying for these scholarships.  All applicants can be justly proud of their hard work and achievements.  The PAF has had the honor of awarding over 150 scholarships in the PAF’s 15 years of its existence,” Fladger said.

With all of the scholarship winners together, Lavoie congratulated them with the reminder that “We are not alone.  Our solidarity is a wonder and a beauty as we all act together to make this a better world.”

The PAF Executive Director, Yvette Transou served with Jones and Fladger in the selection process.   In presenting the scholarships, Fladger expressed PAF’s appreciation to Pontiac High School Counselor Beatrice Wright.  “Mrs. Wright was extremely helpful in the committee’s selection process,” said Fladger.

PAF’s Vice President, and lawyer, Ayanna Hatcher and Lavoie, chair of the PAF’s very engaging mentoring program, assisted in the awarding of the scholarships.

Dr. Walter Burt, Pontiac School District superintendent, expressed the Pontiac School Board and School District’s appreciation for the success of the young scholars and expressed “thanks to the scholars’ parents whose support and guidance was invaluable in enabling the scholars in their education success.”

Retired Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Fred Mester, PAF’s founder and president, expressed the PAF’s appreciation for the school district and Superintendent  Dr. Burt for their support in the Foundation’s many and varied activities for the 2012 school year.  “These students represented our hope for the future,” commented Mester.

Mester also  expressed appreciation for the dedicated work performed by the scholarship committee.  “We cannot thank enough the families and organizations who have funded the scholarships in continuing the memory of their loved one(s) in this most meaningful way,” said Mester,  who also thanks the School Board for its support.
