Revamped Michigan Science Center opens in Detroit

DETROIT (AP) -- The former Detroit Science Center has reopened under a new name. Hundreds visited the Michigan Science Center on Wednesday, more than a year after financial difficulties forced the science center to close. The 150,000-square-foot museum located in Detroit's midtown cultural center had been $6.2 million in debt and facing liquidation earlier this year. The Detroit News says fundraisers have collected $5 million for the new institution. After Wednesday's special opening, the museum will operate weekends only until Jan. 30. Then, it will operate Wednesdays through Sundays. Officials say they anticipate 260,000 people will visit in the first year of operation. Visitors will be able to see a special traveling exhibition, "Bodies Human: Anatomy in Motion," in addition to familiar permanent displays and the IMAX Theater. ---------------- Online: http://www.michigansciencecenter.net.
