Zoo Society helping out Peruvian students

ROYAL OAK (AP) -- The Detroit Zoological Society plans to send school supplies to rural communities along the Amazon River. From April 6-15, DZS staff members and volunteers are to deliver the supplies that were bought with donations to the Peru Adopt-A-School program. The volunteers travel to Peru at their own expense. They'll work with zoological society staff passing out books, paper and supplies to hundreds of students in remote villages. According to DZS, Peru Adopt-A-School donations provided more than 3,000 students and teachers with educational materials and training in 58 communities during the 2011-12 school year. The Detroit Zoological Society is a nonprofit that operates the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Zoo. ---------------- Online: http://www.detroitzoo.org/adoptaschool. Published: Mon, Apr 1, 2013
